Watercolor Mini Panels

Hi friends! I hope your weekend was great! Spring is finally here and we had a fun outdoorsy weekend. The spring flowers are coming out and all the snow is gone.

This week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog we have a Mythology / Inspired by a story theme. Fun! I am looking forward to seeing all the interpretations on this theme. Don't miss the gorgeous project by our April guest designer Paula Roomer aka PaNaRoo.

I have very fond memories of my grandfather telling us stories when I was a kid and always liked the old tradition of story-telling. As a result, I make up a lot of stories for the kids and it is such fun. Bed-time usually consists of a book and then a made up story. The stories I tell Anton are the most elaborate, with made up worlds, travel through time, sequels etc. and this layout is about those stories. The journaling is written on the back. I made simple watercolor background to illustrate some of the stories. The title translates: 'Once upon a time'.

I cut up watercolor paper in 4 x 4 in squares and played around with simple scenes and color-blending. Leo is also enjoying watercoloring and joined me for part of the session. When he paints, I often give him a whole stack of printer paper and then one or two proper watercolor sheets. This time, he refused the printer paper, got very upset and stomped off to my studio, where he searched for the good paper. How funny. I didn't think he could really tell the difference between the two.

The panels were painted with a combination of wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting.

I also made some that are just random colors.

I ended up with a big pile of panels, enough for lots of future projects too.

The edges were distressed and I stitched the panels to the background paper.

A secret door. The word stamp is from Tim Holtz's Noble Gent.

One of the stories features a mysterious sea creature. I embellished the squares with stamping and rub-ons

I love watching the watercolor do its magic as the colors blend.

There are also some mirrored stars.

This panel has more of a dramatic sky and mood.

  8. WOW! I love your concept for this project and how skillfully you pulled it off! You are truly an artist yourself and I really enjoy seeing your original artwork mixed in with the products we love. I think it's totally inspiring to make a whole stack of these at once, too. And I laughed at your son's discerning eye when it comes to quality paper!

  9. Anna-Karin, I love that you turned the stories you tell your boys into a work of art! What a beautiful page, it's like a watercolor quilt. I am sure that Anton looks at this and talks about your stories, and that is just too funny about Leo and the paper! Wonderful! xx Maura
